The annual show by the Society of Independent Artists in New York was advertised as “without juries or prizes”. Anyone who paid the $6 membership could enter. Duchamp submitted the piece in secret while acting as the Director of the Society, and was refused entry.
A statement about the closed-mindedness of the art scene at the time.
More ironically, the original was lost and eight replicas were re-created from baked earthenware, once again defying the point of the original use of "readymade" art.
